PUNJAB SUGAR MILLS STOP PURCHASING SUGARCANE

Saturday, December 06, 2014 - Islamabad—The suger mills in Punjab have stopped to purchase sugarcane from growers in the province due to reduction in support price of the crop by Sind government. Sectery General Kissan Bachao Tehreek, Rai Ahmed Noor said that the sugar mills have stopped issuing of permits for purchasing of the crop today. He said that the farmerswould suffer huge financial loss if punjab government also reduced the price of sugarcane as inputs for growing the crop has increased manifold.

He said the sowing of wheat would also affecte due to non-purchasing of sugarcane by the sugar mills, adding that target set for wheat by the government would also not be achieved.

A farmer, Sher Ali Dhudhi said that Sindh government would also review its decision to save thesugarcane growers from financial loss. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Bosan Friday termed the price reduction decision of sugarcane by the Sindh government as unjustified.

The minister said that Punjab government had fixed Rs.180 rupees per 40 kg while Sindh Government had fixed it at Rs 182 per 40 kg but through another notification, the Sindh Government made considerable reduction in the prices which he said was deplorable.

“The new notification of Sindh government’s Decision of Interim minimum price of Sugarcane, now fixed at Rs.155 per 40 kilogram for crushing season 2014-15 is unfair, unjust,” Bosan said according to a press release issued by the Ministry here. Bosan demanded the Sindh government to immediately restore the older notification, having Rs 182 price for per 40 kg of sugarcane. The Minister also deplored the delay in crushing of sugarcane which could not be started.
